The colors and shapes of the umbrellas that dot the sand are represented in Mary Calkins’ playful “Life is a Beach” series. Achieving unusual results by combining techniques, Calkins enjoys working with collage allowing her non-representational images to inspire enjoyment of the materials themselves, and provoke individual interpretations. Calkins’ exuberant, energetic artwork is a rich fusion of color, texture, and environmental and historical influences.
